Kerala CM Vijayan Opposes, Says He'll Seek Legal Advice On Its Implementation

The Kerala government has announced its decision to seek legal advice to question the implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.

During an all-party meeting held on Wednesday chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, he said that in the context of the upcoming local body elections, legal advice will be sought as a government and as a political party to question the SIR.

“The move to implement the intensive voter list revision based on the 2002 list when the revised voter list was in place during the last Lok Sabha elections is unscientific and ill-intentioned," he said.

The decision was supported by all parties present in the meeting, except BJP.

The parties shared concerns that there are many difficulties in revising the voter list based on the 2002 electoral list and that the SIR is being implemented with a specific purpose. Opposition leader VD Satheesan said that he fully agrees with the concern shared by the Chief Minister and is ready to join the case if it goes to court. CPI(M) state secretary MV Govindan said that this is an unconstitutional and anti-democratic act.

The meeting was attended by PC Vishnunath (Congress I), Sathyan Mokeri (CPI), PK Kunhalikutty (IUML), Stephen George (Kerala Congress M), P J Joseph (Kerala Congress), Mathew T Thomas (JD(S)), Thomas K Thomas (NCP), Uzhamalakkal Venugopal (Congress S), K G Premjith (Kerala Congress B), Adv. Shaja G S Panicker (RSP Leninist) K R Girijan (Kerala Congress Jacob), K Surendran (BJP), N K Premachandran (RSP), Ahmed Devarkovil (INL) and Antony Raju (Democratic Kerala Congress).
