The final notification for allocating registration numbers in KL-90 series for State government vehicles has been issued. As per the gazette notification, government vehicles will be registered in KL-90 and KL-90D series. Some numbers will be reserved specifically for Ministers, high-ranking government officials, protocol vehicles, and other designated individuals.
After the expiry of the D series, the group of letters and the registration code will be followed by alphabet ‘D’ and a series of numbers.
Vehicles owned by Central government departments, autonomous bodies or institutions controlled by the Union government will be in KL-90A series and subsequently KL-90E series after the expiry of the A series. Vehicles owned by the Local Self-Governments departments will be in KL-90B series, and after its expiry, the registration code will be followed by KL 90F series.
Similarly, vehicles owned by quasi-government institutions, autonomous bodies, boards, corporations and any other institutions under the control of the State government, and vehicles owned by universities other than deemed universities will be of KL-90C series. After its expiry of the existing series of numbers in alphabet C, the registration code will be followed by KL 90G series.
The buses owned by the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will continue to use the KL-15 series. However, the motorcars and jeeps owned by the public utility will bear registration codes in KL-90 series. When the vehicles owned by the government and government agencies under the KL-15 and KL-90 series are transferred to any other third parties who are ineligible for the series, it should be registered in the appropriate series.
No provision
At present, there is no provision for assigning a separate exclusive registration mark for vehicles owned by the government and various government agencies and institutions as per the prevailing rule. In view of several instances of misuse of the ‘Government of Kerala’ board, violating the stipulations in Rule 92 A of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Rules, the State government had decided to introduce a special series of registration marks for vehicles owned by the State and Union governments and other government agencies.
Kerala has also not yet implemented the bharat series (BH series) introduced by the Centre, which allows the Union government staff residing in the State to use the BH series registration across the country. The court litigations and confusion in levying the State share of tax on the Union government vehicles, along with other reasons, have delayed the process of rolling out the BH series in Kerala, said a senior government official.
