Kerala local body polls 2025: Congress, CMP announce candidates for Kozhikode Corporation

The Congress party on Monday (November 10, 2025) announced a list of 22 candidates to contest in various divisions of the Kozhikode Corporation in the upcoming 2025 Kerala local body polls.

MLA Ramesh Chennithala announced 22 of the 49 Congress candidates in the presence of former KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran and DCC president K. Praveen Kumar.

The names include Ashraf Chelatt (6 - Kunduparamba), K.Pushpa (7 - Karuvasseri), K.P.Babu (9 - Thadambattuthazham), M.Krishnamani (14 - Chevarambalam), E.K.Shiji (17 - Chelavoor), Bindu K. Parappakunnummal (19 - Medical College), U.V.Bindu (20 - Medical College South), Aamat Radhakrishnan (23 - Nellikkode), C. Ratheeshan (24 - Kudilthode), V.T.Shijulal (25 - Kottooli), P.K.Ratnaprabha (28 - Kuthiravattam), Thuvasseri Dineshan (29 - Pottammal), Sindhu Sunil Kumar (31 - Kuttiyilthazham), Safreena Abid (36 - Azchavattam), K.Udayakumar (46 - Cheruvannur), Sharmila Muraleedharan (64 - Thiruthiyad), P.K.Suveni (68 - Thoppayil), Sheeja Kanakan (70 - Karapparamba), Sreeja Suresh (71 - East Hill), T.Prashanth (72 - Athanikkal), K.Saritha (73 - West Hill) and K.V.Mini (76 - Puthiyappa). Most of them are making their debut in elections.

However, the probable mayoral candidates, including KPCC general secretary P.M. Niyas, filmmaker V.M. Vinu and former DCC president K.C. Abu, are yet to be announced.

The Congress is contesting in 49 seats altogether in the Kozhikode Corporation, and the list of candidates for the remaining seats is expected to be published by Wednesday (November 12, 2025).

Though IUML, the other major party in the UDF, is yet to come up with a list of candidates, the Communist Marxist Party (CMP), the third coalition partner, has announced its two candidates. The party is fielding V. Sajeev (60 - Chalappuram) and Prajeesh K.V. (51 - Naduvattam).

CPI(M)’s tentative list

On the other hand, the CPI(M) has come up with a tentative list of candidates, though the official announcement is expected on Wednesday. While Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed is the most favoured candidate for the Mayor’s chair, the current Health Standing Committee chairperson S. Jayasree is favoured for the post of Deputy Mayor.

The other notable candidates in the list are Amitha (74 - Edakkad), daughter of former MLA A. Pradeep Kumar, Mili (64 - Thiruthiyad), daughter of former Mayor T.P. Dasan, former councillors Biju Raj (Eranhipalam) and O. Sadasivan (Vengeri). Besides Mayor Beena Philip, present councillors such as P. Divakaran, P.C .Rajan, C.M. Jamsheer, Varun Bhaskar and C.Rekha are not contesting this time.

The CPI(M) is contesting in 61 divisions, while the CPI will field its candidates in five divisions. The NCP will get three seats, while those of RJD and INL are yet to be decided.
