Heavy rains and continuing threat of flash flood prompted several local bodies in Kozhikode district in Kerala to declare a holiday for rural schools on Friday (June 27, 2025). Schools in Karassery, Koodaranhi and Mavoor remain closed as part of the safety measures initiated by the local administrators in the wake of the rough weather alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Two shutters of Kakkayam dam were opened on Thursday night as the water level reached 758.05 metres. Earlier, a red alert was in place in the area noticing the steadily rising water level. District Collector Snehil Kumar Singh, who is also the chairman of the District-level Disaster management Authority, reviewed the situation. He urged the local residents along the Kuttiyadi river to stay alert.

KSEB officials said the shutters were opened by complying with the dam safety protocol. They also informed that the water level in Kuttiyadi river might rise up to 4 ft with the release of excess water following heavy inflow from the catchment area.

Wayanad District Collector D. R. Meghasree, who declared a holiday for schools on Friday, also reviewed the safety measures following the opening of one of the four spillway shutters of Banasura Sagar dam at Padinjarethara. The shutter was opened at 10 a.m. after giving timely alerts to the local residents. A KSEB engineer said the rainfall was found moderate in the catchment areas on Friday and there were no safety threats at the moment.
