Kerala University has launched an inquiry into the irregularities in the evaluation process of its entrance examination for four-year undergraduate programmes.
The university cancelled a rank list a day ago after major consistencies came to light. A re-evaluation has also been ordered.
The anomalies came to light after a candidate formally submitted a complaint to the university, claiming that her marks did not reflect her performance in the exam. A re-evaluation of her paper confirmed that she had indeed been awarded fewer marks than deserved. Based on this, a sample audit of other papers across various departments was conducted, which revealed further errors in the evaluation process.
The entrance examination was conducted on May 8 on the university’s Karyavattom campus for admission to 16 study departments. Around 3,600 students appeared for the examination.
Many students had raised concerns about unexpectedly low scores, prompting an internal review by the university.
The University Registrar demanded a written explanation from the vice-chairman of the Credit and Semester System wing, which oversees the admission process.
In light of the issue, Vice-Chancellor (in-charge) Mohanan Kunnummal constituted a three-member Syndicate subcommittee chaired by Syndicate member Gopchandran K.G. to investigate the irregularities. The panel has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within a week.
Allaying concerns of further delay in the admission process, the university assured that a revised rank list will be released promptly to ensure that eligible students are not denied admission due to these errors.
