Clashes broke out in Thiruvananthapuram after the Kerala University union election results were declared.
Clashes broke out in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday between the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M), and the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Congress, after the Kerala University union election results were declared.
The clash was still ongoing at the time of reporting. Police used several rounds of water cannons and tear gas to disperse protesters during the violence. A face-off was also reported between the police and protesters.
The SFI alleged that the police attacked its workers during the confrontation. The organisation also claimed that stones were pelted at its members while they were taking out a victory parade following the election results.
In the Kerala University union elections, the SFI won 35 out of the 37 general seats, while the KSU secured two seats.
