Kerala’s Vigilance has filed a first information report (FIR) against Sulthan Bathery MLA I.C. Balakrishnan in connection with alleged corruption in cooperative banks being governed by the Congress in Wayanad district.
The investigation team, led by Wayanad Vigilance DySP Shaji Varghese, which had probed the situation that led to the death of former DCC treasurer N.M. Vijayan and his son, especially the financial dealings, had submitted a report to the State Vigilance, based on which the case has been registered. The Vigilance Director has given the approval for the same.
Mr. Balakrishnan is the sole accused in the case so far, although the investigation also involved other senior Congress leaders in Wayanad district.
After the death of Vijayan, there had been allegations that the MLA had received bribes for appointments in the banks governed by the Congress.
The MLA, along with then then DCC president N.D. Appachan and another senior leader K.K. Gopinathan, was listed as an accused for abetment of suicide at the time.
