The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 11 of Kerala’s 14 districts on Monday, warning of heavy rainfall. Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha districts remain under an orange alert.

A ‘red alert’ indicates extremely heavy rainfall of over 20 cm in 24 hours, while an ‘orange alert’ means very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm.

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rains are expected to persist across the state throughout the week. This is following the weakening of a depression over Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, which has now become a well-marked low-pressure area and is expected to drift slowly eastward while gradually weakening.

Additionally, a low-pressure area s likely to form over the west-central and adjoining North Bay of Bengal around May 27. Strong westerlies are likely to continue at lower tropospheric levels over Kerala and the Lakshadweep region during the next seven days.

Heavy rains battered Kerala on Sunday, causing widespread damage – leaving houses inundated, low-lying areas flooded, and agricultural lands ruined. The rains also caused trees to be uprooted across the state, including one that crashed onto a moving train in Thrissur. The incessant downpour caused flooding in several areas, led to rivers overflowing, and prompted the opening of gates at some dams.

A 64-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him while he was riding a two-wheeler in Kozhikode. In another incident, two teenage siblings were electrocuted by snapped wires after a tree fell onto an electric post while they were fishing in a stream in the Kodanchery area of the same district.

A holiday was declared for educational institutions in 9 districts of the state, including Malappuram, Kozhikode, Pathanamthitta, Kannur, Kasaragod, Thrissur, Wayanad, Kottayam and Idukki.

At least 40 houses were partially damaged, and four were completely destroyed in the northern Palakkad district, while over 30 houses were flooded in Thrissur. A 28-member NDRF team reached Wayanad as rains intensified, according to authorities.

A zonal review meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, scheduled to be held in Kannur on May 26, was postponed due to heavy rains, a CMO source told PTI.
