The Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) handled 32.4 million passengers in the first nine months of 2025.
“KIA is the busiest airport in South India, and the third largest in the country. The airport handled domestic passenger traffic of 27.3 million and international passenger traffic of 5.1 million in the first nine months of 2025, representing year over year growth of 5% and 30.1%, respectively,” Fairfax India Holdings Corporation said in the interim report for the nine months ended September 30, 2025.
New routes
It attributed the growth to launch of new routes and commencement of new international airlines from the KIA.
“This growth has been supported by increased capacity from major domestic and international carriers, the launch of new routes, and the start of operations by new international airlines,” it said.
On the airport’s current expansion plan it said that there are plans to include new airport metro stations, upgrades to existing terminals, additional airplane taxiways, and new tunnels, connectors and walkways.
“The Bangalore International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) plans to increase the overall capacity of the airport also remain under way, and include the construction of the second phase of Terminal 2 by fiscal year 2029 and a third terminal by fiscal year 2034. The combined capacity of the existing terminal, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 is expected to be beyond 90 million passengers per annum,” it said.
The Fairfax India Holdings Corporation holds a majority stake in the BIAL which operates the KIA.
The BIAL, under a concession agreement with the Union government until the year 2068, has the exclusive rights to carry out the development, design, financing, construction, commissioning, maintenance, operation, and management of KIA through a public-private partnership.
