Killed In Gaza Strike, Al Jazeera Journalist's 'Last Will' Posted Online: 'Don't Forget...'

Al Jazeera reporter Anas al-Sharif, who was among five journalists killed in an Israeli strike near Gaza City’s Al-Shifa Hospital, left a final message, calling on people not to forget Gaza.

Hours after his death, a lengthy message — described as his “last will and testament", appeared on his social media account, reportedly posted by a friend after his death was confirmed.

“This is my last will and testament, my final message. If these words of mine reach you, know that Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice. Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you. God knows that I have exerted all my effort and strength to be a support and voice for my people, ever since I opened my eyes to life in the alleys and neighborhoods of Jabalia refugee camp," the post read.

The 28-year-old journalist expressed a wish to return to his family in occupied Ashkelon (al-Majdal), but wrote that “God’s will was supreme and his judgement was final." He reflected on the repeated losses he had endured and vowed he had “never hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without falsification or distortion."

In the post, al-Sharif urged Gazans not to be silenced and called on them to “be bridges toward the liberation of the country and its people, so that the sun of dignity and freedom may shine upon our usurped homeland."

He also appealed for care for his wife, children, and mother, writing, “If I die, I die steadfast in my principles… Do not forget Gaza. And do not forget me in your righteous prayers for forgiveness and acceptance."

Alongside al-Sharif, Al Jazeera said correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal were killed in the same strike. The announcement was delivered live on air by a visibly emotional anchor.

Following the attack, the Israeli military acknowledged targeting the group, describing al-Sharif as a “Hamas terrorist" and claiming he “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas" and was involved in rocket attacks.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said intelligence and documents from Gaza proved his affiliation.

The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate condemned the killings, calling them a “bloody crime" and an act of assassination.
