Kolkata Police have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a police officer. The accused, identified as Chiranjit Mondal, was taken into custody by Jadavpur Police Station officials last night.

A police source told India Today that Mondal is a habitual traffic violator who "never obeys traffic signals on the road and, when caught, pretends to be a police officer to get away every time". The source added, "This is the first time he has been nabbed red-handed."

According to police, the incident took place on Thursday when traffic police officials intercepted Mondal while he was riding a motorbike after allegedly ignoring a hand signal at a traffic stop. Upon being stopped, he claimed to be a police personnel posted at Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate but failed to produce any official documentation to prove his identity.

The police source said that during questioning by Jadavpur Traffic Guard officer Partha Ghosh, Mondal first claimed to be a police officer, then said he was a police constable, and later claimed to be a civic volunteer. When asked to show identity proof, he could not provide any, revealing his false claims. He was then handed over to Jadavpur Police Station.

Following the incident, the traffic police officer submitted a formal complaint against Mondal, and a case was registered under Sections 319(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the accused was arrested as per procedure, and the grounds of arrest were duly communicated to him. Further investigation is underway.
