The Kolkata law college rape case has brought back memories of the infamous RG Kar incident from nearly a year ago and has also caused a rift within the ruling Trinamool Congress, with party heavyweights Kalyan Banerjee and Mahua Moitra trading barbs over the former's remarks shaming the survivor regarding the case.
As many as four people have been arrested in connection with the case. Incidentally, the main accused, Monojit Mishra - a Trinamool Congress student leader - had called for "immediate justice" and a "death sentence for the rapist" on his social media account following the brutal rape and murder of a medical student at RG Kar in Kolkata last year.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS
Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra has received a showcause notice from his party following his remarks about the Kolkata law college rape survivor. Mitra questioned why the first-year student had gone to the scene of the crime alone. Earlier, the party had distanced itself from both Mitra and Kalyan Banerjee's survivor-shaming remarks, calling them personal opinions.
Kolkata Police have increased the number of members in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the law college gang rape case to nine. Considering the gravity of the case and to ensure a time-bound investigation, four additional members have been added to the SIT, police sources told India Today TV.
Kalyan Banerjee's attack comes in response to Mahua Moitra slamming the Trinamool Congress for not condemning its own leaders over loose talk, taking an indirect dig at his 'avoid bad company' shocker on the law student’s gang rape.
The victim alleged that the accused took photos and videos of her during the gangrape and also threatened to beat her with a hockey stick.
CCTV footage obtained from South Calcutta Law College has confirmed the allegations made by the student in her rape complaint, police said. The footage, which also captured moments leading up to the June 25 incident, shows the first-year law student being forced into the guard's room.
"The CCTV footage confirms the girl's allegations. It shows the movements of the three accused, the security guard, and the victim. We are currently examining the footage," the police told news agency PTI on Saturday.
According to the findings of the medical examination, there was an abrasion mark around the woman's neck, and a few marks on her breasts. The report further added that there were no lacerations (cuts) on her body.
