Kovai Sangamam begins

COIMBATORE: Minister for information and publicity M P Saminathan on Saturday launched Kovai Sangamam – Namma Ooru Thiruvizha in the city on Saturday, bringing together more than 400 artists to showcase the rich folk music and dance traditions of Tamil Nadu.The two-day festival was inaugurated at VOC Grounds. Organised to revive and celebrate indigenous cultural practices, the event features a wide range of folk art forms, traditional music and street performances.After inaugurating the event, the minister said the sangamam was a grand effort to reclaim the heritage and pride of Tamil Nadu, known as the cradle of culture, art and tradition.“It is our govt’s duty to support and recognise our ancient folk arts and rural artists.

These sangamam events serve as a bridge connecting our traditional arts with the people and the younger generation,” he said.He added that through such events, artists receive due recognition and appreciation, encouraging them to pass on these art forms to the next generation.The festival will feature folk performances, including kavadi attam, parai attam, thodar dance, bharatanatyam, karakattam, villu paatu, thaniyan koothu, silambattam, oyilattam, thudumbattam, folk songs and dramas on Sunday.
