Just when Real Madrid thought the door to the La Liga title race had creaked open, it slammed shut loudly and painfully.

A frustrating 1-1 draw against Real Betis did the immediate damage on the pitch. But the bigger blow? An untimely injury to their talisman, Kylian Mbappe.

According to AS, Mbappe suffered a “muscle overload" in his left hamstring during the match, an issue that forced him to ask for a substitution late in the game.

Notably, the injury came without any contact, often a worrying sign for muscle-related problems.

“I have no idea (how Mbappé is), he had some discomfort and we will see how it develops in the coming days," said head coach Álvaro Arbeloa.

Initial assessments suggest a possible hamstring strain, with further medical tests expected to determine the severity and recovery timeline.

Given Mbappe’s history of recurring physical issues this season, particularly linked to his left knee, this latest setback couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Title Race All But Over?

The result leaves Madrid eight points adrift of league leaders FC Barcelona, a gap that now feels insurmountable with time running out.

Ironically, this was supposed to be Madrid’s moment to pounce. Barcelona had just lost their own star, Lamine Yamal, to a hamstring injury for the remainder of the season.

Instead of capitalising, Madrid stumbled and may now have lost their own match-winner in the process.

Injury Crisis Deepens

Mbappe’s setback is just the latest in a brutal injury list for Los Blancos this season. Key players like Eder Militao and Arda Guler are already ruled out for the remainder of the campaign, leaving the squad stretched at the worst possible time.

While the immediate concern is Madrid’s fading title hopes, there’s also a longer-term lens.

Both Mbappe and Yamal are expected to recover in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
