The final text of the understanding reached between the United States and Iran explicitly recognises the role of Iran and Oman in determining the future of maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz and, according to a person familiar with the developments cited by Iran’s Fars News Agency, effectively accepts Tehran’s right to collect related service fees.

The person said revisions made during the final stage of negotiations placed greater emphasis on Iranian-Omani authority over the strategic waterway.

Upon announcing the agreement, US President Donald Trump said on social media that the crucial Strait of Hormuz would be open “toll free".

“In the final moments of the negotiations, the text of the memorandum underwent changes that definitively and explicitly emphasized the exercise of Iran-Oman sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz," the person was quoted as saying by Fars News Agency.

Iran and the United States have reached an agreement to end nearly four months of war, paving the way for detailed negotiations on the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief. Few details have been officially released, but Iranian media outlets have published what they say are elements of the 14-point agreement. Before the deal was announced, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the details would only be disclosed once the agreement is signed.

According to the person, earlier versions of the text contained language intended to guarantee Iran’s authority and arrangements in the strait. However, the final wording goes further by stating that the “future administration of maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz" will be determined by Iran and Oman.

The source said the revised language explicitly acknowledges the role of Tehran and Muscat in determining how maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz will be managed in the future.
