 Assam police gives a gun salute; fan bid goodbye with 'Mayabini'

A bevy of fans joined for the last rites of the prolific Assamese singer, Zubben Garg, on Tuesday on the outskirts of Guwahati. The cremation of the late artist took place at Kamarkuchi in Sonapur, approximately 25 km from the capital city.

This place will be converted to a memorial, along with a second memorial at his native place, Jorhat.

At the cremation ground, many admirers gathered to sing one of his famous songs, ‘Mayabini.’ The funeral pyre was kindled by his younger sister, Palmee Borthakur, along with Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sharma, the close ones of the family, according to Hindustan Times. As the priests chanted the sacred religious texts, Assam Police gave a gun salute to the late singer.

Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, was visibly shaken from the unfortunate goodbye and had a meltdown.

While the proceedings took place, she mourned the loss. The ceremony was attended by many notable authorities, including Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma; the assembly Speaker, Biswajit Daimary; and the union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Pabitra Margherita, and Sarbananda Sonowal. Furthermore, the Congress leader and the leader of the state opposition, Debabrata Saikia, along with many MLAs, paid their respects to the late singer.

About Zubeen Garg's demise

Zubeen Garg passed away on Friday, September 19, in Singapore after drowning in the sea while swimming with multiple associates and friends. The 52-year-old visited the country for the North East Festival, showcasing the regional culture. The post-mortem was completed in Singapore, but the state decided to carry out a second post-mortem, ruling out any chances of foul play. “The last time that I got to see beloved Zubeen.
