In just the opening week of the 2025–26 NBA season, Victor Wembanyama has transformed early-season buzz into undeniable dominance. The San Antonio Spurs’ 21-year-old phenom is entering only his third year in the league.
Wembanyama proves that he is no longer just a promising prospect; he’s now the story of the NBA. After leading the Spurs to a perfect 3-0 start behind historic numbers, league officials have made it official: Wembanyama is the NBA’s Western Conference Player of the Week.

Victor Wembanyama’s early-season tear has been nothing short of extraordinary. Averaging 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, and six blocks while shooting nearly 57% from the field, the 7-foot-5 French sensation has elevated both his game and his team.
The Spurs’ unbeaten run marks their best start since 2019, fueled by a level of consistency and confidence that fans have waited two years to see.
The NBA’s announcement marks Wembanyama’s second time receiving the weekly honor, but this one carries a different weight. His historic stat line makes him the first player in league history to record over 100 points, 40 rebounds, and 15 blocks through his team’s first three games.
After setting a Spurs franchise record with 40 points in the season opener against the Dallas Mavericks— adding 15 rebounds and three blocks— Wembanyama made history again, becoming just the sixth player ever to post 40-plus points and 15-plus rebounds in a season opener. Speaking to ESPN after that dominant display, he didn’t hide the grind behind his rise. “God knows I worked… hard in the summer,” he said.
San Antonio Spurs’ resurgence signals new era under Wembanyama
San Antonio’s 3-0 start feels like more than a statistical outlier— it’s a signal of resurgence.
Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle has emerged as a perfect backcourt complement, averaging 17 points, 6.3 rebounds, and five assists, while Devin Vassell continues his upward climb with 17 points per game. For Wembanyama, this week’s recognition is only the beginning. “This is my best summer so far,” he told reporters before the season. “I feel better, I look stronger, and the scale says I’m heavier. So, everything is a green light.”As for the Eastern Conference, Milwaukee Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo secured the award with his stunning statline last week– 36.0 points per game, 16.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists. Also Read: Why New Orleans Pelican's Zion Williamson missed the game against Boston Celtics
