India on Friday said it remains in touch with the United Kingdom over the extradition of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, who is wanted in India in connection with a multi-billion-dollar bank fraud case.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said legal proceedings in the matter are currently underway in the UK. He added that India is continuing engagement with the British authorities on the extradition request.

“We have been in touch with the UK side on the extradition request. We understand that legal proceedings in this particular matter are currently underway," Jaiswal said.

He further said the government remains fully committed to ensuring that fugitives are brought back to India to face the law of the land.
