The Reds continue to add onto their never-ending supply of firepower as latest reports suggest that Liverpool has reached an agreement to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a record-breaking transfer fee.

According to The Athletic, the package is valued at £130 million ($176m) to Newcastle, including solidarity payments, with Liverpool paying around £125 million directly.

Should the transfer go through, it would set a new Premier League transfer record, eclipsing the £106m Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernández from Benfica in January 2023.

Isak is expected to undergo his medical on Monday, after which he will sign a six-year deal with the reigning Premier League champions.

Liverpool’s Persistence Might Pay Off

The news of this move comes after a series of back-and-forth negotiations throughout the summer. Liverpool had initially tested the waters with an informal approach in July, signalling a willingness to go as high as £120 million, though Newcastle held firm with a valuation closer to £150 million.

The Merseyside club then tabled a £110m formal bid, which was rejected. It seems that only after pushing their offer beyond the £120m mark did talks regain momentum, with Newcastle seemingly softening their stance.

Newcastle’s Position and Isak’s Stance

Newcastle, for their part, were reluctant to lose their talisman. Club officials even explored offering Isak a new contract with a release clause effective from next summer. However, the Swedish striker made it clear he wished to pursue a new challenge.

In remarks that shed light on his mindset, Isak expressed frustration with Newcastle’s handling of his situation:

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself."

Newcastle, meanwhile, publicly denied making any promises about facilitating a transfer, insisting that Isak remained tied to the club under contract.

Signs of a Departure

Adding fuel to speculation, Isak was left out of Newcastle’s squad for their pre-season tour of Asia. Instead, the 25-year-old continued his training privately in Spain while his representatives engaged in discussions with Liverpool.

This absence was widely interpreted as an indication of his desire to leave and added further pressure on Newcastle’s hierarchy to resolve the situation before the transfer deadline.
