Dhanbad: In an act of compassion and social service, a local women-led organisation, Sewa aur Samarpan (Service and Devotion), has ensured that no patient or attendant at the Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital (SNMMCH), Dhanbad, goes hungry for the last couple of years.
Founded and led by social worker Kajal Jha, the group prepares and distributes freshly cooked meals daily to patients and their attendants, many of whom come from economically weaker backgrounds.“Most of the patients here are from remote districts like Giridih, Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, and Godda. They not only struggle for treatment but also for basic needs like food and shelter,” Jha said. “While attendants sleep on hospital floors, they often have no access to proper food.
That’s why we started this initiative,” she said. The organisation’s team of volunteers not only provides meals but also organises blood donation drives to help patients in emergencies. “Many attendants are asked by doctors to arrange blood, but since they don’t know anyone here, it becomes a huge challenge. So, we coordinate with blood banks and also donate blood ourselves,” Kajal added. On the occasion of Doctors’ Day this year, Dhanbad MLA Raj Sinha attended one such blood donation camp organised by Sewa aur Samarpan. Praising the initiative, Sinha had said, “This group of women is offering true selfless service by helping strangers in need. It is a remarkable example of humanity.”Operating with minimal resources and maximum devotion, the group has become a lifeline for the underprivileged patients at SNMMCH, setting a powerful example of community care and compassion.
