Locals call for action amid one more accident at Poroscodem junction

Mapusa: Yet another accident involving a Goa-Indore container was reported at the traffic signal junction at Poroscodem in Pernem along NH 66 on Monday night. The spot has become increasingly perilous for pedestrians and motorists alike, with several accidents being reported in its vicinity in the recent past.Locals blame poorly illuminated roads and govt inaction in rectifying the situation despite repeated complaints. According to them, the absence of street lights greatly hampers visibility during the nights. An incline in the road and a bend also exacerbate the situation.Less than a month ago, a truck, car and motorcycle ran into a stray buffalo amid poor visibility at the junction, critically injuring the motorcycle rider.Due to the absence of street lighting, a Maharashtra-registered vehicle had recently rammed into the pole of the Poroscodem traffic signal itself.“The speed rumblers here have been placed right at the traffic signal. They should be at least half a kilometre away so that the speed can be reduced. It is particularly risky here during dusk when many children return from tuitions. The authorities should take this issue seriously before tragedy unfolds,” a witness to Monday’s accident said.

Stray cattle on this stretch of road, especially during nightfall, is also a major concern. Locals said fatalities are also reported here.Vehicular density at this junction is always high as it is the sole entry point to Pernem town for motorists intending to travel towards the villages of Torsem, Tambose, Ugvem, Mopa, and towards Maharashtra.Keshav Naik
