Loco pilot applies emergency brake, averts train mishap in West Champaran

Bettiah: A major train accident was narrowly averted on Saturday morning near Kumarbagh railway station in West Champaran district after the driver of the Bagaha–Patliputra Intercity Express spotted damage on the track and applied emergency brakes in time.The train was travelling from Bagaha to Patliputra at high speed on a newly laid track when the driver noticed a broken and damaged section of rail ahead. Acting swiftly, he brought the train to a halt just short of the affected portion, preventing a possible derailment and averting a major tragedy.Senior railway officials were immediately informed, after which technical and engineering teams rushed to the spot to inspect the track.

The train remained stranded for several hours while repairs and safety checks were carried out. It was allowed to proceed only after officials gave clearance.Jyoti Prakash Mishra, divisional railway manager (DRM), Samastipur railway division, said the incident occurred on a newly laid track. “An investigation has been launched to ascertain whether there were lapses in construction, maintenance or inspection. Such lapses are extremely serious and will not be tolerated. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” he said.Passengers expressed relief over the narrow escape and praised the driver’s presence of mind, saying his timely action saved hundreds of lives.
