'Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra', directed by Dominic Arun has taken Malayalam cinema into new territory with its dark fantasy superhero flavor.The movie introduces audiences to Chandra, played by Kalyani Priyadarshan.
Chandra is indeed Neeli, which is a different version of Yakshi inspired by Kerala folklore. Now the makers have officially unveiled the characters played by Dulquer Salmaan and Tovino Thomas in the movie.Dulquer Salmaan took to his Instagram handle to share his character Odiyan's glimpse. He wrote, "The mysterious World of #Lokah is expanding ! Introducing Odiyan from the world of Lokah."
Tovino Thomas' character is introduced as Chathan. The makers shared the character glimpse and wrote, "The mysterious world of #Lokah is expanding ! If you haven't seen the film yet and wish to avoid spoilers, please stop reading now. The film shows a different kind of Yakshi which is not the fearsome one we have heard in folklore. It makes her a protector figure with superhuman powers. Through Chandra aka Kalliyankattu Neeli, Kalyani Priyadarshan becomes the first female superhero in Mollywood or even in Indian cinema.
The ending explained
The climax sees Chandra taking down Nachiyappa, the ruthless leader of an organ trafficking ring. But even after the victory, Chandra realizes her existence is far from normal. She bids farewell to Sunny (Naslen) and his friends. In an emotional conversation, Kalyani reveals that her powers make her both a savior and an outsider. “If an anomaly were to happen, I will return,” she says, leaving the door open for future battles while finding peace in her identity as Neeli.
Post-credit scenes build the 'Lokah' universe
Dulquer Salmaan appears as Odiyan, a mysterious ninja-like figure in the mid-credits.Did you miss anything in the end? Well, the movie hints at an interesting link with Tovino Thomas starrer 'ARM'.The end credits take a darker turn, teasing Tovino Thomas’s Chathan. Interrogated about an archaeological dig gone wrong, his goblin-like character hints at deeper, more dangerous layers of the Lokah universe. Tovino Thomas' Chathan character, during the interrogation, says, "It could be me... or one of my 389 siblings. We all look alike." This hints at a bigger universe and also connections with ARM which also ended on an ambiguous note.
