Tens of thousands of protesters marched through London waving English and British flags in a demonstration organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, drawing a huge police deployment and a counter-rally from anti-racism campaigners. The streets were packed with demonstrators heading toward Westminster, seat of the UK parliament, carrying the Union Jack, the red-and-white St George’s Cross and some even American and Israeli flags, with others donning “Make America Great Again" hats in support of US President Donald Trump. Chants targeted Prime Minister Keir Starmer while placards demanded “send them home."

Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, billed the “Unite the Kingdom" march as a celebration of free speech and a tribute to American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead on Wednesday.

“Hundreds of thousands already pack the streets of central London as we Unite as one for our freedoms," Tommy Robinson posted on X (formerly Twitter). A counter-demonstration organised by Stand Up to Racism was also held.

London’s Metropolitan Police said more than 1,600 officers were on duty across the city, including 500 drafted from other forces, to oversee both protests alongside high-profile football matches and concerts.

“We will approach them as we do any other protests, policing without fear or favour, ensuring people can exercise their lawful rights but being robust in dealing with incidents or offences should they occur," the police said.

The protests come as immigration has surged to the forefront of British politics, overshadowing economic concerns. More than 28,000 migrants have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year- a record pace.
