Lorry driver held for illegal sand mining from Palar river in Tirupattur

The Kandali police arrested a 47-year-old man for illegal sand mining from the Palar River at Sevvathur village here on Saturday.

The arrested person has been identified as B. Gnanasekeran, a lorry driver from Krishnagiri district.

Based on an alert, a special police team had been patrolling Sevvathur Koot Road on the outskirts of Tirupattur town. When they tried to intercept Gnanasekaran’s lorry, he sped away, the police said. After a chase, the police cornered and inspected the vehicle. The team found illegal river sand in the lorry.

Initial inquiry revealed that Gnanasekeran had illegally mined sand from the Palar along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway to sell it to private contractors in the town.

He was arrested and the lorry was seized. He has been lodged at a sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is under way.
