Almost a year after a 31-year-old doctor was raped and killed inside a locked room at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where she worked, her grieving parents await justice.
Earlier today, they reached the national capital in a bid to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood to lodge their dissatisfaction with the agency’s investigation into the case.
CBI, which took over the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case from the Kolkata police, has submitted five status reports, including the latest on July 16, to the Sealdah court, which is hearing the case.
The victim doctor’s father was livid over the probe agency’s investigation, saying that he has lost all faith in the police and the CBI, and his only hope is in the judiciary now.
“Today we met the CBI Director, Joint Director, IG…Coming to the CBI Headquarters and wasting time are the same thing. We have lost all faith in the police and the CBI. For reasons best known to them, the CBI appears compromised, either politically or otherwise. They are just parroting what the Kolkata Police had said," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

He further alleged that attempts were made to destroy evidence.
“There were three bodies at the crematorium that day. Yet our daughter’s body was cremated first. Why the hurry? Steps were taken to wipe out evidence," he claimed as quoted by news agency PTI.
“They want us to bring evidence. Is that our job or theirs? The CBI is spineless. None of our demands were heard. We believe there were more people involved and they need to be brought to justice," the doctor’s father said
The family also pointed to the Supreme Court’s observation, which raised questions about the handling of the case.
“Those questions still remain unanswered… all they (CBI) say is, ‘investigation is ongoing’. That’s not enough," the family said.
On Sunday, the doctor’s parents said they were reaching out to various political parties, except the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), to join the Nabanna Abhijan, a march to the West Bengal secretariat, demanding justice for their daughter on her death anniversary on August 9.
What Happened At RG Kar Hospital?
On August 9 last year, the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee’s body was discovered inside the Chest Medicine Department’s seminar hall on the fourth floor of the hospital’s emergency building. The nature of her injuries, which indicated brutality, and the fact that it happened within a state-run hospital, sent shock waves across West Bengal and beyond.
Widespread protests erupted across campuses, drawing students, doctors, and civil society to the streets.
The Kolkata police initially investigated the case, before the Calcutta High Court transferred the probe to the CBI.
A civic volunteer, Sanjoy Roy, was found guilty of rape and murder by a Kolkata court in January 2025, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. But the victim’s family and several rights activists insist the case is far from closed.
Two other arrests followed — Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, on charges of misleading the probe.
But Mondal was released on bail after the CBI failed to file a charge sheet within 90 days.
