The Local Self-Governments department has identified new locations for setting up regional sanitary waste incineration facilities in Kerala after finding the earlier locations unsuitable. Each plant will have a capacity of 20 Tonne per day and will cater to multiple districts. The plants are now proposed to come up in Piravanthur in Kollam district, Brahmapuram in Ernakulam district, Kuttippuram in Malappuram district and Kadannappalli in Kannur district.
The Clean Kerala Company Ltd. (CKCL) will set up each of the proposed plant on land with an extent of 50 cents under a suitable Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. The department had earlier identified Kottarakara in Kollam district, Muvattupuzha in Ernakulam district, Kuttippuram in Malappuram district and Kadannappalli in Kannur district, with the objective of bridging the gap in the existing decentralised sanitary waste management system.
Since the execution of the project at Muvattupuzha faced difficulties, the government directed the Kochi Corporation to set apart 1 acre of land adjacent to the existing incinerator at Brahmapuram, already earmarked in the Master Plan for future development, for establishing the proposed regional sanitary waste incineration facility. As the site earlier identified at Kottarakara was found unsuitable, 50 cents of land out of CKCL’s one acre land at Piravanthur (KINFRA Park) has been identified for the Kollam regional facility.
The Kollam regional facility will serve Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta districts while the Ernakulam facility will serve Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki districts. The Malappuram facility is expected to meet the demands of Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts and the Kannur facility will serve Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts.
Suchitwa Mission has further recommended that the stalled and small-scale sanitary waste incinerator projects be discontinued and that sanitary waste from local bodies be directed to the proposed regional facilities to ensure optimal utilisation of resources.
