Paris Saint-Germain signed Lucas Chevalier from Lille for €40 million, possibly ending Gianluigi Donnarumma's time at the club due to stalled contract talks over wages.

Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille, a move that could mark the beginning of the end for Gianluigi Donnarumma’s time in Paris.
The 23-year-old French goalkeeper joins the Ligue 1 and Champions League winners on a contract until 2030, with a reported transfer fee of around €40 million ($47 million).
While PSG hail Chevalier as one of Europe’s brightest talents, the signing also underlines the club’s readiness to transition away from Donnarumma, who has just one year left on his contract.
Donnarumma’s Contract Standoff
Donnarumma, who arrived from AC Milan in 2021 amid huge fanfare, is among PSG’s highest earners at €850,000-a-month (£736,000). The Italian international had been open to extending his deal, but talks stalled over his request for a pay rise. PSG’s new wage policy—lower base salaries with greater performance-based incentives—clashed with Donnarumma’s demands, creating an impasse.
The club are understood to be willing to part ways this summer, confident that they will still possess two top-class goalkeepers at the Parc des Princes.
Calais-born Chevalier progressed through Lille’s academy, enjoyed a loan spell at Valenciennes, and established himself as first-choice keeper in the 2022–23 season. His performances earned him the 2024–25 Ligue 1 Goalkeeper of the Year award from the UNFP.
“I am a kid living his dream. Ever since I was small, I wanted to play at the very highest level. I will wear this shirt with passion and ambition," Chevalier said.
A Goalkeeping Domino Effect?
Donnarumma’s potential departure has already sparked transfer speculation. Manchester United, whose goalkeeping situation has been under scrutiny, have been linked—particularly amid concerns over Andre Onana’s injury and form.
Backup keeper Altay Bayindir also faces an uncertain future, raising the prospect of United entering the market for a top-tier keeper.
For now, PSG prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, with Chevalier’s arrival setting the stage for a possible summer shake-up between the posts.
