The decision, cleared earlier this week, is seen as a major step toward enhancing access to the temple city of Madurai and nearby destinations. With the new designation, the airport is expected to eventually handle direct international flights, potentially linking the city to overseas hubs such as Dubai and Colombo.

What it means for travellers

The upgrade can mean a lot for travellers as it can lead to shorter travel times to southern Tamil Nadu.

At the moment, many international travellers who are coming to Madurai have to first land at one of the larger gateways to India, such as Chennai or Bangalore.Direct international services from Madurai would reduce the need for such connections, making the region more convenient for pilgrims, tourists, business travellers and members of the Tamil diaspora visiting their hometowns.

Infrastructure expansion planned

The international upgrade will also see major improvements in airport infrastructure.

Plans are already underway to expand the airport runway and build a new terminal that will be fitted with modern facilities for airport users. These improvements are expected to increase passenger capacity and enhance passenger experience at the airport.

Boost for tourism in the temple city

Madurai is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the country. The city is a major pilgrimage center with the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple as its main tourist destination.Better international connectivity can give a boost to the status of the city as a gateway for tourists to the spiritual and cultural centers of southern Tamil Nadu.

Wider benefits for the region

Better air connectivity can have a positive impact on the neighboring districts of Dindigul, Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari too. This can give a boost to the tourism industry of the region. With the city of Madurai gearing up to welcome international flights, the city can become a major aviation hub for tourists wanting to visit the historical region of southern Tamil Nadu.
