Zohran Mamdani’s win as New York’s first Muslim mayor sparked racist backlash from MAGA supporters and right-wing accounts on social media.

New York Post and Daily News newspapers announce Zohran Mamdani's mayoral election win the morning after Election Day in New York City, US.

New York Post and Daily News newspapers announce Zohran Mamdani's mayoral election win the morning after Election Day in New York City, US.

Zohran Mamdani’s Tuesday win in the New York City mayoral elections sent the US President Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement’s supporters and sections of the American far-right in racist meltdowns on social media.

Prominent right-wing social media accounts like ‘End Wokeness’ said Zohran Mamdani’s win was akin to bringing “third world politicians" into New York City and likened it to voting for “third world policies".

Diarmuid1916, who describes himself as a “member of the dissident right" with a “strong revulsion for white liberal, college-educated women," was among those reacting online.

“You and Mamdani are the poster boys for how broken our immigration system is! Go back to India!" @diarmuid1916 posted on X.

@diarmuid1916 was responding to New York City Council member Shekar Krishnan (@voteshekar), who posted a photo of himself and Zohran Mamdani during a past protest where they were arrested.

Krishnan, who represents Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside, later celebrated his re-election to the City Council, thanking voters for what he called “overwhelming support".

The 34-year-old Democrat, a democratic socialist and state lawmaker from Queens, who will become New York’s first Muslim mayor when he takes office in January, also faced calls to be deported.

An Israeli minister also called Mamdani a “Hamas supporter" for his stance on the issue of Palestine.

Israel’s diaspora minister called on the city’s Jews to move to Israel following his victory. “The city that once stood as a symbol of global freedom has handed over its keys to a Hamas supporter," right-wing Minister of Diaspora and Combating Antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, wrote on X.

He went on to say that Mamdani’s views were “not far from those of the jihadist fanatics who, 25 years ago, murdered three thousand of its own people," referring to the September 11, 2001 attacks by Al-Qaeda on New York and Washington.

Mamdani is a long-standing supporter of the Palestinian cause.

His positions on Israel — which he has called an “apartheid regime" while branding the war in Gaza a “genocide" — have drawn the ire of some in the Jewish community.

“New York will never be the same again, especially not for its Jewish community. The city is walking, eyes open, into the abyss into which London has already plunged," Chikli added on X.

“I invite the Jews of New York to seriously consider making their new home in the Land of Israel."
