Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Significance
According to the Hindu Scriptures, Mahalaya Amavasya is one of the most revered days and holds a great religious and spiritual meaning for Hindus as it falls during Pitru Paksha.
Mahalaya Amavasya is also known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya and it iccurs during the month of Ashwina. It is the day that the departed family members or Pitru go back to their Pitru Loka, according to scriptures. Before departing for Pitru Loka, it is also believed that those who worship them with great devotion throughout these days receive happiness and health from their ancestors.
It is the last day to pay rites for the salvation of the ancestors.
Mahalaya Amavasya 2025: Puja Rituals
1. Take a bath first in the morning before starting any Pitru-related rituals.2. Clean the puja room and the house.3. The family's male member invite the Brahmins at home.4. For Brahmin Bhoj, women cook a variety of sattvik meals.5. After the Brahmins arrive home, a male family member performs tarpan with the assistance of a priest or Brahmin.6. Women serve food to these Brahmins.7. Family members offer them clothes, shoes, and dakshina once they finish the bhoj.8. By touching the Brahmins' feet, all of the family members seek their blessings and bid them farewell.9. Recognize that you don't accompany them out. It's best to let them go because it's believed that leaving them off or accompanying them outdoors is considered bad.10. Next, go and give the cows, dogs, and crows the food you have set aside for them.11. You can eat after completing all the ceremonies.12. Giving food, clothing, and dakshina to those in need, including children and the elderly, is auspicious on this day.13. To worship the peepal tree, many women go to temples and offer water mixed with little milk and sugar, and then offer it to the peepal tree. Then light a diya with desi ghee and keep it beneath the tree.
