Maharashtra cabinet grants 6-month extension to candidates elected from reserved seats for caste validity certificate submission

Mumbai: The state cabinet on Tuesday granted a six-month extension to candidates elected to reserved seats in local self-government bodies for the submission of caste validity certificates.“Insufficient manpower in the caste verification committees, as well as the appointment of teachers from government and semi-govt schools for census work, are creating difficulties in completing the necessary school and home inquiries in time in many cases. As a result, there is a delay in obtaining caste validity certificates for candidates elected from reserved seats,” officials said.“Keeping this fact in mind, candidates elected in the local body elections held in the year 2025-26 will be given another six-month extension. For this, the cabinet approved the necessary amendments to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, and Maharashtra Municipal Council, Municipal Panchayat and Industrial Town Act, and to issue an ordinance in this regard with the approval of the Governor,” they added.
