A 19-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a moving sleeper coach bus in Maharashtra’s Parbhani district on Tuesday morning. Minutes later, she and a man claiming to be her husband allegedly wrapped the newborn in a cloth and threw him out of the window, leading to the baby’s death, police said.

The shocking incident took place around 6:30 am on the Pathri-Selu Road. It came to light when a passer-by noticed a bundle being thrown from the moving bus and found a baby inside. He immediately informed the police using the emergency helpline 112.

The woman, identified as Ritika Dhere, was travelling from Pune to Parbhani along with Altaf Shaikh in a sleeper coach bus operated by Sant Prayag Travels. During the journey, Dhere went into labour and delivered a baby boy onboard.

Instead of seeking help, the couple allegedly wrapped the newborn in cloth and discarded him out of the bus. The driver, who saw something being thrown out of the window, questioned Shaikh, who replied that his wife had vomited due to motion sickness.

Meanwhile, the alert citizen who discovered the baby alerted the police. A patrolling team was dispatched and managed to intercept the bus. After a brief inquiry, police took Dhere and Shaikh into custody.

During questioning, the couple reportedly told officers they could not afford to raise the child, so they decided to abandon him. The baby died after being thrown onto the road, police confirmed.

Both Dhere and Shaikh are originally from Parbhani and had been living in Pune for the past 18 months. Though they claimed to be married, they could not provide any documents to prove their relationship.

Police later took the woman to a hospital for medical care. A case has been registered at Pathri Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to concealment of birth and secret disposal of a dead body.

A notice has been served to both accused, and further investigation is underway.
