Maharashtra will go to the polls in 246 municipal councils and 42 nagar panchayats on December 2, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare announced on Tuesday. Counting of votes will take place the following day, December 3.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Waghmare said the schedule for elections in 29 municipal corporations, 32 zilla parishads and 336 panchayat samitis is yet to be announced.
A total of 6,859 members and 288 presidents will be elected in these local self-government bodies. The elections will involve around 1.7 crore eligible voters across the state, with 13,355 polling centres set up for the polls. Voting will be conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
The State Election Commission has set November 17 as the last day for filing nominations, with scrutiny scheduled for November 18. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until November 21.
Waghmare added that the elections will be held according to the electoral rolls of October 31, ensuring all eligible voters are included.
