A 28-year-old man from Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar died by suicide after a video showing him and a friend urinating in public went viral online. Police said the man jumped into a well in Thokmal Tanda, Jalna, after facing repeated harassment and threats over the incident.

The viral video showed the two friends urinating below a signboard reading “Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar" at a railway station. As the clip spread widely across social media platforms, the men issued a public apology. However, despite their apology, the victim allegedly continued to receive abusive messages, threatening calls, and relentless online harassment.

What did the police say?

According to the police, several local social media pages and accounts, including one belonging to a local Shiv Sena district chief, circulated the video, further amplifying the public backlash. “Fed up with the harassment, the man told his friends he was unable to handle the situation and ended his life," said a police official.

Investigators have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against those responsible for sharing the video and inciting the harassment that allegedly drove the man to suicide.

Online bullying

The incident has reignited discussions around online shaming and cyberbullying, particularly how viral videos can lead to real-world consequences. Authorities have urged people to act responsibly on social media and to refrain from spreading videos that can cause humiliation or harm.

The police have launched an investigation to identify all those involved in circulating the video and sending threatening messages to the deceased.
