Following a meeting of senior leaders at Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee’s residence on Saturday, the party has announced a series of organisational changes as it continues to grapple with an escalating internal crisis following its defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.
Among the key decisions, Saayoni Ghosh was removed from the post of Yuva Sabhapathi (Youth President). The party also appointed Kunal Ghosh as President of the North Kolkata unit. The North Kolkata unit had until now been managed by a core committee headed by senior MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who, earlier in the day, signed a letter submitted by the party’s dissident camp seeking recognition as a separate bloc within the TMC
In another significant move, veteran TMC leader and MP Sougata Roy was appointed as an Advisor in the Lok Sabha. The decisions were taken during a meeting attended by senior party leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee.
The reshuffle comes at a time when the TMC is facing one of the biggest challenges in its history. A dissident faction led by Kakoli Ghosh Dasdidar has sought recognition as a separate bloc within the party and claims the support of 19 of the TMC’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs. The group has also announced plans to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday to seek recognition as the “real TMC".
The crisis deepened further after Bandyopadhyay reportedly signed the letter submitted by the rebel camp. Meanwhile, former minister Manas Bhunia resigned from the party on Saturday, adding to concerns within the Mamata Banerjee camp.
In the Assembly, the rebellion has already had major consequences, with 64 of the party’s 80 MLAs breaking away and securing recognition from the Speaker. Dissident leader Ritabrata Banerjee has since been recognised as the Leader of Opposition, a decision currently under challenge before the Calcutta High Court.
The latest organisational changes are being viewed as an attempt by Mamata Banerjee to regain control of the party amid the deepening turmoil.
