Maldives becomes first country in the world to ban smoking for this age group

In a big and bold step, the Maldives has become the first country in the world to put a ban on future generations. According to the President’s Office presidency.gov.mv (Maldives), the “generational” ban on tobacco use would be applicable on anyone born on or after 1 January 2007.

Now the news has caught international attention of travel-and-health policy watchers.The ban is applicable on tourists visiting the island-state as well. This means people who fall under this age category will be prohibited from purchasing or using any form of tobacco products in the country. What it means for travellersThe law came into effect on 1 November 2025. Under the rule, persons born on or after 1 Jan 2007 may not be sold, or use tobacco products including cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco.

Also the ban is universal and covers residents and foreign visitors alike. Additional measures include strict regulation of vaping and e-cigarettes as well. The country has already banned import, sale, use, possession and distribution of e-cigarettes for all ages in 2024.

Heavy penaltiesRetailers selling to under-age can face fines of up to 50,000 Maldivian rufiyaa (INR 2,87,740) and those using banned devices may be fined 5,000 rufiyaa (28,775).

According to the government of Maldives, it’s a strategic move and a broader public-health agenda: “historic milestone … to protect young people from the harms of tobacco.” Travellers should take note
