The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government has made it mandatory for all cinema halls and multiplex screens across the state to screen at least one Bengali film every day during prime time.
In a notification issued on Wednesday, the government announced that all cinema halls and every screen of multiplexes across the state must mandatorily screen one Bengali film every day during prime time, amounting to 365 screenings per year.
The government further clarified that “prime time" refers specifically to the period between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
“In every Cinema hall, and in all screens (each screen) of every multiplex situated in this State, 365 prime time shows/screenings of Bengali films shall mandatorily be held throughout the year, with at least one Bengali show per day for all 365 days during the year. Explanation: Prime time shows shall mean shows held between 3:00 PM to 9.00 PM," the notification stated.
The government has said that necessary amendments will be made to the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation of Public Exhibitions) Rules, 1956, to incorporate this new requirement. Authorities, relevant departments, and cinema associations have been instructed to ensure strict compliance.
