A man has been arrested after a firearm was discharged during an incident inside Sydney Airport’s T2 domestic terminal on Wednesday morning. According to the Daily Mail, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have launched an investigation into the incident and established a crime scene. Authorities confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
An airport spokesperson said there were no injuries and no lockdown was required. “Sydney Airport is currently assisting the Australian Federal Police following an incident earlier this morning. No injuries occurred as a result of the incident. An arrest has been made and the airport is operating normally," the spokesperson said.
Footage from the scene, shared by Sydney radio station 2GB on social media, shows an individual on the ground near café serving and dining areas, restrained by at least three people, including an armed police officer. A man can be heard shouting in the background.
Sources told 2GB host Ben Fordham the man allegedly tried to grab an AFP officer’s firearm during a struggle. One eyewitness told the station: “I was on the other side of the coffee shop when the gun went off. It was loud. Everyone hit the deck. I think it was a police gun fired during the initial struggle."
