Man arrested for assaulting woman in Shamli

Shamli: A 27-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for allegedly assaulting a 22-year-old woman on a road in Shamli district. A video of the incident, purportedly showing the act, has been widely circulated on social media.A complaint was lodged by the woman’s father stating that on Sunday his daughter was returning home with her sister-in-law after buying medicine from a nearby village when the accused intercepted her on the way. When she resisted, he allegedly molested and assaulted her before fleeing after issuing threats. Both the woman and the accused belong to the same village.Taking cognisance of the CCTV footage, a special team was formed under the additional SP and circle officer to arrest the accused. Shamli SP NP Singh said, “A case was registered against the accused under sections 74 (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of BNS.

Further legal action is underway.”
