A 24-year-old man was arrested by the Balanagar police in connection with the murder of a 39-year-old chef during a drunken altercation near Gudenmet X Road on Monday evening. The accused was identified as Sidhapuram Ajay, a resident of Balanagar.
The incident was reported around 4.30 p.m. on Monday when police received information about a man lying unconscious beside the foot over bridge at Gudenmet X Road, Balanagar. On reaching the spot, they found an unidentified man lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab injuries.
The deceased was identified as Mohammed Gafoor, 39, a resident of Vattepally, and employed as a chef, following a complaint lodged by his brother, Mohammed Rasheed.
Investigation revealed that Ajay and the victim were sitting near the footpath after consuming alcohol when an argument broke out. The quarrel began when Gafoor allegedly asked Ajay to move from his spot. The exchange turned violent, and the deceased reportedly kicked Ajay, resulting him to fall.
In retaliation, Ajay punched Gafoor, and claiming he feared further assault, pulled out a fruit-cutting knife and stabbed him killing him on the spot. He then fled, discarding the weapon in nearby bushes.
Police recovered the stainless-steel knife used in the attack and registered a case under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
