A powerful explosion outside Madhyamgram High School late on Sunday night has claimed the life of a man, sparking panic in the area and prompting a high-level investigation. The victim, identified as Sachchidanand Mishra, was a resident of Uttar Pradesh.

The blast occurred around midnight near the school's entrance, close to the Madhyamgram railway station. According to police, Mishra was seen carrying a bag that suddenly exploded, leading investigators to suspect that it contained explosive materials.

He suffered critical injuries and was first taken to Barasat Medical College before being shifted to a hospital in Kolkata, where he died on Monday morning.

The intensity of the explosion was captured on CCTV, and police are examining the footage to determine whether anyone else was accompanying Mishra before the incident.

Following the blast, senior police officers, a bomb disposal squad, and forensic experts reached the spot, cordoning off the area to prevent public access. Items including a bag, a mobile charger, and clothes were recovered from the site.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also taken an interest in the case, with officials visiting both the blast site and the Barasat District Hospital. Authorities are awaiting a forensic report to establish the exact nature of the explosion.

Speaking to India Today, Atish Biswas, Additional Superintendent of Police, Barasat, said, "The man has been identified as Sachchidanand Mishra, a resident of UP.

The nature of the explosion is yet to be identified. A forensic team will visit the place of occurrence. Nothing more can be shared at the moment."
