A man died after he jumped off the metro viaduct to the road near the Vadakkekota metro station near Thripunithura on Thursday (August 7) around 2.30 p.m.
The deceased was identified as Nisar, 32, of Tirurangadi in Malappuram district.
The metro authorities had switched off the power supply to the station and the stretch between Kadavanthra and Thripunithura as the man, who jumped onto the track, started moving along the line.
“The man, who was standing outside the viaduct, jumped down, avoiding the net spread by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel below and fell on the road,” said a rescuer.
Nisar, who was later admitted to a private hospital, died in the evening. The metro services on the stretch were disrupted for 40 minutes following the incident.
The Kochi metro police have registered a case for unnatural death.
KMRL announces inquiry
Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has ordered a director-level inquiry into the incident.
Describing the incident as extremely unfortunate, KMRL said that a detailed investigation at the highest level under the Director (Systems), had been initiated to examine the circumstances and recommend necessary preventive measures.
Following the incident, the emergency trip switch (ETS) was immediately activated by security personnel, and power to the third rail was cut off to ensure safety. Kochi metro’s operations and security teams responded swiftly, and senior officials, police, and fire services were promptly informed.
To manage the disruption, short-loop services were operated between Aluva and Kadavanthra. Track clearance was received, and normal services between Kadavanthra and Thripunithura resumed by 2.44 p.m.
