Two persons were arrested for accidentally firing a country-made gun that killed their cousin in Kallicherri village near Pernambut town in Vellore on Wednesday.

Police identified the arrested individuals as K. Sabareesan, 25, and B. Vijay, 23. They were cousins of the deceased, V. Harikrishnan, 24. All three belonged to Kallicherri village and were farmers.

Initial inquiry revealed that Harikrishnan, along with his cousins, went hunting wild birds in the nearby hillock area. He had taken his country-made gun with him for this purpose. Police stated that he had acquired the gun many years ago from friends in Kerala to protect his crops from wild animals, especially wild boars, as the village is located near reserve forests on the boundary.

Police said that as the two entered a small cave in the hillock, Sabareesan and Vijay were attempting to operate the gun when it accidentally misfired. Harikrishnan was hit and died immediately.

Following alerts from farmers and nearby residents who heard the gunshot, Pernambut police inspected the scene. The body was sent to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore for post-mortem examination. A case was registered, and the two were arrested. Police seized the country-made gun from them. An investigation is under way.
