A man driving a car marked “Uttar Pradesh Shasan” was arrested in Hardoi after he allegedly molested a woman waiting for her husband at the Roadways bus stand late on Saturday night.

The accused, identified as Aadesh Mishra, a resident of Kaushalpuri locality, allegedly approached the woman, offered her money, and tried to force her into his car. Locals intervened after the woman raised an alarm, and the police detained the accused along with the vehicle.

According to police, the woman, who hails from Baghauli area and was visiting her sister in the city, had gone to the bus stand to return home.

While she was waiting, the accused stopped his car near her, allegedly made obscene remarks, and offered Rs 1,000 to accompany him. When she resisted, he attempted to drag her into the car.

Hearing her cries, nearby people surrounded the vehicle, and the woman’s husband also arrived at the scene. The police reached shortly after being alerted through Dial 112 and took the accused into custody.

City Circle Officer (CO) Ankit Mishra said, “A case has been registered under relevant sections on the woman’s complaint. The accused has been arrested, and further legal action is being taken.”

Preliminary investigation revealed that the car, though carrying a government sticker, was privately owned and the accused worked as a driver for a government officer.

The incident has raised concerns about women’s safety in public spaces, with local residents pointing out that such cases expose gaps in the state’s Mission Shakti initiative, aimed at protecting women.

Police said the accused is being interrogated and strict action will follow based on the investigation.
