Posing as a Non Resident Indian (NRI) from Canada, a man approached a 34-year-old software engineer with a marriage proposal on a matrimonial site and made away with ₹30 lakh after luring her with gifts.

After losing her life savings, the victim, Umashree, a resident of Banasawadi, approached the East Division Cyber Crime Police and filed a complaint on Tuesday.

In her complaint, the victim had uploaded her biodata on a matrimonial site looking for a prospective groom in September this year. A few days later she came in contact with a person named Jayesh, claimed to be an Anglo-Indian living in Canada, with his family settled in the United Kingdom and said he was planning to relocate permanently to India.

The victim said Jayesh contacted her frequently over calls and messages, gaining her trust. He told her he would send his luggage and gifts to her address in India.

A few days later, she received calls from individuals claiming to be agents from a courier service and informed her that a parcel from Canada had arrived in her name and demanded payment for clearance. Believing them, the woman initially transferred ₹37,000. However, the callers soon claimed that the parcel contained USD 1,00,000 in cash and a cheque worth USD 2,00,000, and demanded additional payments for taxes, insurance, demurrage and conversion charges.

Over time, she ended up transferring a total of ₹30.19 lakh to various bank accounts provided by the fraudsters. When they later demanded another ₹14.7 lakh, she realized she had been scammed. She said the accused refused all video calls, shared only photographs, and has now deleted his profile on the matrimonial portal.

The woman has preserved all chat transcripts, call logs, payment receipts, and bank transaction details as evidence.
