Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was groped and nearly kissed by a man during a public appearance in Mexico City on Tuesday. The incident has sparked outrage on social media and raised questions about her security arrangements.

The unsettling moment took place in the capital’s historic downtown, where Sheinbaum was greeting supporters and speaking with residents.

Footage widely shared on social media shows the man approaching the Mexican President from behind, placing his hands on her shoulders, and attempting to kiss her. For several seconds, no member of her security team intervened. The man was eventually pulled away after Sheinbaum calmly turned towards him.

The video, now viral, has prompted widespread criticism and concern. Many users on social media questioned how the country’s first female president could have been left so exposed in a public setting.

One user on X wrote, “She should use this as a good reason to reevaluate her security." Others condemned the man’s behaviour, calling it “disgusting" and demanding his arrest.

Some also raised political suspicions, suggesting the incident might have been staged or linked to Mexico’s tense political climate.

“It’s probably part of the plan. A staged mini scandal to distract from the many real problems in the country and wide indignation against her government. Inconceivable to put the head of State and government in such a position," a user wrote

Another added, “Because she’s on the same side as the Cartels, so they must’ve thought nothing bad could happen to her, since they’re probably responsible for close to 99% of the political violence in Mexico."
