The Thrissur West police have arrested a man for allegedly attacking police personnel by hurling a crude explosive and using pepper spray during an inspection under Operation Toofan earlier this week.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Nixon alias Kuttan Sanju, a native of Cheeyaram, was taken into custody in connection with the attack on senior civil police officers Tony Tharakan and Sathyajith, and civil police officer Vineesh Bharathan of the Thrissur West police station.
The incident occurred on June 20, when the officers, who were on patrol duty, were alerted about a man allegedly creating panic by brandishing a knife in Shivarampuram. When the police team reached the spot, the accused allegedly hurled a crude explosive (‘gundu’) at them and sprayed pepper spray, causing minor injuries.
The police said a major mishap was averted as the explosive fell into water on the road and did not detonate with full impact.
Additional police personnel later reached the scene and brought the accused under control. Investigation revealed that he has around four criminal cases registered against him in Ollur and Town East police stations.
The accused was produced before a court and remanded.
