A 44-year-old man from Hosur was arrested by Vaniyambadi Town police in Tirupattur on Sunday for pledging fake five sovereigns of gold jewellery and taking ₹ 1.5 lakh cash from a pawn broker in the area a few days ago.

Police said the arrested person was identified as S. Madhavan, a mechanic from Hosur. Initial inquiry revealed that pawn broker R. Sait (47) was running a jewellery shop in Vaniyambadi town for many years.

On September 9, the suspect Madhavan met Sait at his jewellery shop. He gave a fake gold chain to the victim and requested cash to meet medical expenses of his family in the town.
