Shillong: The city police have initiated an investigation following the arrest of a 42-year-old man accused of street-side sexual harassment and stalking women in public areas, particularly around the Laitumkhrah locality in the capital city.The suspect, Tamdorlang Risaw, son of the late Restermen Wanniang, was apprehended on Saturday after two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) were filed against him by female victims on October 15.The police have registered a case under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 against Risaw. Additional FIRs have also been lodged for harassment of young women on the streets.Through coordinated efforts by multiple police stations, Risaw, a resident of Nongrah Block-II, was arrested in Tawang, Mawsynram.
The vehicle allegedly used for stalking was recovered, according to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem.The earliest reported incident of harassment by Risaw dates back to May, when the same vehicle was seen near Don Bosco Square. Similar incidents were reported on Sept 17 along Dhankheti-Malki Road. On Sept 23, the vehicle reportedly stopped in front of a complainant and her friend near Don Bosco Laitumkhrah, where the driver allegedly engaged in obscene acts before leaving. The latest incident occurred on October 13 near Loreto Convent, where the complainant was confronted by the driver, who engaged in obscene acts and wrongfully restrained her with his vehicle.The series of incidents involving Risaw have sparked outrage among residents of the hill city. In response, police are implementing enhanced safety measures to ensure the streets remain safe and free from such incidents.
